TL;DR
Principal Optical Component Engineer (Photonics/Optoelectronics): Managing the selection, qualification, reliability, lifecycle, and supply-chain risk of optical components for photonic, telecom, datacom, and laser products with an accent on optical performance, manufacturability, and long-term availability. Focus on designing qualification plans, evaluating optical tolerances and coupling interfaces, assessing component risks, and coordinating engineering changes with suppliers and cross-functional teams.

What you will do

  • Own optical component selection, qualification, approval, lifecycle management, reliability, and engineering change assessment.
  • Review optical BOMs, specifications, drawings, test reports, component risks, obsolescence, and supply-chain exposure.
  • Lead optical, mechanical, environmental, and reliability qualification plans and evaluate performance margins.
  • Assess optical alignment tolerances, coupling designs, mechanical interfaces, and tolerance-stack analyses.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Supplier Quality, Procurement, Manufacturing, contract manufacturers, and suppliers on design-for-manufacturability and production issues.
  • Review supplier process changes, PCNs, EOL notifications, site transfers, audits, and alternate-component qualifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Five or more years of experience in optical engineering, photonics, optoelectronics, component engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of optical and optoelectronic components and assemblies.
  • Experience with optical component qualification, reliability testing, specifications, drawings, datasheets, and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of optical tolerances, alignment, coupling efficiency, beam propagation, and optical interfaces.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical-writing skills, with the ability to work with global suppliers and cross-functional teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience with optical transceivers, coherent optics, lasers, photonic integrated circuits, optical engines, or fiber-optic modules.
  • Knowledge of optical, telecom/datacom, reliability, and industry standards.
  • Experience with optical packaging, assembly, materials, manufacturing technologies, statistical analysis, design of experiments, and accelerated reliability testing.
  • Experience with PCNs, EOLs, engineering changes, lifecycle management, and alternate-component qualification.
