Sr. Software Engineer (Backend/API)

Location: Remote within the United States. Must have lived in the United States for 3 of the last 5 years and be able to obtain a U.S. Federal Position of Trust clearance designation.

What you will do

• Enhance and maintain the Travel Pay API, Claim Ingest API, and backend systems supporting the Beneficiary Travel Self-Service System.
• Develop integrations with VA.gov, the VA API ecosystem, mobile applications, and staff-facing tools.
• Implement performant, secure, and reliable services for automated claim adjudication and processing.
• Deliver coding, testing, and documentation within two-week agile sprints.
• Participate in code reviews, pair programming, continuous improvement, and production troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with DevOps on CI/CD workflows, zero-downtime deployments, and on-call escalations.

Requirements

• Must reside in and be able to perform work in the United States.
• Must have lived in the United States for 3 of the last 5 years.
• Ability to obtain a U.S. Federal Position of Trust clearance designation.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Experience developing backend services using modern programming languages.
• Familiarity with RESTful APIs, integrations, asynchronous processing, cloud deployment patterns, and automated testing.
