Principal Data Scientist, Workforce Solutions (GBSG)

Location: Mountain View, California or San Diego, California, United States

Base pay: $247,500–$335,000 in Mountain View or $241,000–$326,500 in San Diego, annually. The position may also include a cash bonus, equity rewards, and benefits.

What you will do

• Set the end-to-end data science strategy for Workforce Solutions across payroll, time, benefits, and contractor payments.
• Analyze customer behavior to drive attach, activation, retention, payroll usage, time tracking, and benefits adoption.
• Design and evaluate high-stakes experiments and apply causal methods when controlled experiments are not possible.
• Define the canonical metric system for attach, seat growth, engagement, retention, and portfolio performance.
• Build customer segment insights, business performance narratives, and prioritized product and go-to-market bets.
• Own data architecture and instrumentation, mentor senior and staff data scientists, and establish technical standards.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in data science or analytics with business-unit strategy and outcome ownership.
• Deep expertise in experimental design, causal inference, quasi-experimental methods, synthetic control, difference-in-differences, and uplift modeling.
• Experience influencing product and growth roadmaps and communicating data narratives to Director, VP, and SVP-level leaders.
• Advanced SQL and Python skills, including instrumentation, pipeline and ETL construction, and work with large multi-source enterprise data.
• Experience with subscription growth, unit economics, product-led growth, mentoring, and technical standards.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a quantitative discipline or equivalent work experience; an advanced degree is preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience in payroll, HR technology, fintech, or another compliance-heavy domain.
• Experience building and shipping AI agent systems.
