Staff Back End Engineer (Applications)

Location: Toronto, Canada; most teams work in the EST time zone, with some teams in AST, PST, and Central time zones.

What you will do

• Design and evolve backend services and architectural patterns powering customer-facing product workflows across multiple teams and domains.
• Architect data models for hierarchical structures, relationships, graph-like data, and large enterprise datasets.
• Lead complex backend initiatives spanning multiple services, product areas, and engineering teams.
• Drive architectural decisions balancing extensibility, performance, reliability, and operational simplicity.
• Improve observability, testing strategies, scalability, and production reliability across owned systems.
• Partner with Product and Engineering leadership, mentor engineers, and raise backend engineering standards.

Requirements

• Extensive experience designing and building complex production backend systems at scale.
• Strong product judgment and experience shaping technical direction across multiple teams or domains.
• Deep expertise in at least one production-grade backend language such as Python, Java, Kotlin, Go, or C#.
• Strong relational schema design, data modeling, and SQL skills, including experience with hierarchical, graph-like, or relationship-heavy data.
• Experience improving scalability, reliability, and observability in distributed or data-intensive systems.
• Excellent communication, architectural reasoning, stakeholder influence, and mentoring skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with graph databases or graph-based modeling.
• Experience building SaaS products for mid-market or enterprise customers.
• Experience with rule-driven systems, validation workflows, or approval and governance platforms.
• Familiarity with AWS infrastructure and Kubernetes.
• Experience in Sales Performance Management, RevOps, or Incentive Compensation.
