Principal Software Engineering - Build System Modernization

Location: Hybrid; report to the Markham or Oshawa office at least three times per week

What you will do

• Lead the modernization of large embedded-software build and test systems from Make- and shell-based workflows to Bazel.
• Define phased migration strategies and rollout models across repositories, toolchains, hardware workflows, and platform variants.
• Design reusable Bazel rules, macros, toolchains, platforms, configuration patterns, and repository standards.
• Migrate embedded applications, libraries, generated code, firmware, and cross-compilation flows while maintaining build parity and reproducibility.
• Integrate Bazel with CI/CD, testing, release, artifact, deployment, observability, security, and infrastructure workflows.
• Improve caching, parallelism, reliability, documentation, training, developer adoption, and measurable engineering productivity.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in software engineering or equivalent experience.
• 10+ to 15+ years of software development experience, with strong production-systems expertise.
• Deep understanding of real-time software architecture and experience shipping safety-critical products in automotive, embedded, calibration, or systems-engineering environments.
• Proficiency in Python and at least one additional engineering-tooling language.
• Experience with large-scale migration from Make or shell-based build orchestration to Bazel.
• Experience with AI-assisted developer productivity, coding agents, code intelligence, knowledge retrieval, workflow orchestration, and measurable evaluation of AI-enabled engineering workflows.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, AI, or a related field.
• Experience building AI assistants, coding agents, knowledge systems, vector search, ranking, or code-intelligence platforms.
• Familiarity with GM engineering tools and internal platform environments.
• Experience supporting large engineering communities with reusable tools, templates, and automation.
