Director, Underwriting Strategy & Governance

Location: Remote - United States

Base salary: $175,000 - $190,000

What you will do

• Support the Associate (VP) Chief Underwriter with underwriting strategy, governance standards, and policy implementation.
• Mentor and coach underwriters while developing and delivering technical training programs.
• Provide expert guidance and delegated underwriting decisions for complex, large, and jumbo cases.
• Participate in quality reviews, audits, case analysis, governance forums, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Support underwriting modernization through new tools, automation, enhanced workflows, and vendor solutions.
• Collaborate with Medical, Actuarial, Product, Reinsurance, Distribution, Compliance, and Operations partners.

Requirements

• 10+ years of life underwriting experience.
• Deep expertise in life underwriting risk assessment, complex case evaluation, and underwriting standards.
• Underwriting signing authority of $20M, including complex case design and advanced sales experience.
• Experience mentoring underwriters or serving in a technical leadership role.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent related work experience required; a master’s degree or MBA is preferred.
• Strong judgment, communication, influence, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work without direct operational ownership.

Nice to have

• Professional designations such as ACS, ALU, FLMI, FALU, or CLU, or progress toward one or more designations.
• Familiarity with AI-enabled underwriting capabilities, underwriting tools, evidence sources, and emerging technologies.
