TL;DR
Staff Software Engineer, System Orchestration (Quantum Computing): Building and operating the control-plane software that schedules quantum programs, manages calibration and hardware access, streams results, and records machine history with an accent on durability, correctness, and production reliability. Focus on designing recoverable stateful services, diagnosing failures under live load, evolving service boundaries and deployment infrastructure, and automating quantum-computer readiness assessment.
Location: Oxford, United Kingdom; hybrid office commitment
Company
develops integrated quantum computing, networking, sensing, and security solutions, including trapped-ion quantum computers and quantum cloud services.
What you will do
- Build and operate the control-plane services that schedule, prioritize, and coordinate quantum programs, calibrations, and customer workloads.
- Design durability and recovery contracts, persistence workflows, crash recovery, and live-data migrations for stateful services.
- Improve machine-readiness assessment, failure diagnosis, correctness, observability, and fleet-wide reliability.
- Define service boundaries, migrate code across services, and develop tooling and test infrastructure.
- Evolve deployment and operations practices as the quantum-computing fleet grows.
- Collaborate with runtime, systems, operations, and scientific teams while contributing hands-on code and reviews.
Requirements
- Deep systems engineering experience and a track record operating production services where data loss is unacceptable.
- Strong Rust experience, or deep proficiency in another systems language with willingness to work in Rust and asynchronous code.
- Experience building and operating stateful networked services exposed through gRPC or REST.
- Knowledge of PostgreSQL, persistence design, crash recovery, data migrations, error handling, observability, and failure modes.
- Experience with scheduling or workflow systems such as Temporal, Hatchet, Airflow, Slurm, or PostgreSQL-backed queues.
- Excellent written and cross-disciplinary communication skills, including the ability to document and compare design options.
Nice to have
- Experience replacing load-bearing systems while they remain in service.
- Production containerized services, Kubernetes, and declarative deployment.
- Distributed tracing, formal specification, or model checking.
- Closed-loop systems, scientific computing, or research-facility experience.
Culture & Benefits
- Hands-on work with scientists, engineers, and operators developing quantum systems.
- Flexible hybrid working in Oxford.
- stock options and an annual performance bonus.
- Generous annual leave, paid holidays, parental and adoption leave, and a home technology stipend.
- Private medical, dental, and vision insurance, plus matching 401(k) and legal insurance.
- Work environment focused on autonomy, productivity, respect, equity, and inclusion.
