Senior Optical Engineer (Photonics)

What you will do

• Design, simulate, and optimize photonic integrated circuits and optical modules for telecommunications, amplification, sensing, and related photonics applications.
• Develop optical test setups for component, subsystem, and system-level testing, calibration, validation, and reliability measurement.
• Create optical test plans, analyze performance data, troubleshoot complex issues, and drive root-cause analysis.
• Use Python to automate laboratory instruments, control test environments, process data, and improve engineering efficiency.
• Support the transition of optical products from research and development into manufacturing by improving scalability, repeatability, quality, and operational readiness.
• Collaborate with hardware, electronics, software, systems, and manufacturing engineering teams on product integration and technical problem-solving.

Requirements

• Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Optics, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• At least 5 years of hands-on experience designing, testing, and optimizing photonic and optical systems.
• Experience designing and simulating photonic integrated circuits with Lumerical, VPIphotonics, or equivalent tools.
• Experience with optical amplification technologies such as EDFA, Raman, or SOA, plus fiber-optic alignment, coupling, splicing, and integration.
• Proficiency in Python for instrument control, laboratory automation, data processing, and engineering analysis.
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with optical communication systems, coherent communications, sensors, or advanced photonic technologies.
• Knowledge of photonic device packaging, thermal and mechanical integration, manufacturability, and product qualification.
• Experience transferring products from research and development into manufacturing environments.
• Familiarity with Git, Agile development, photonic system modeling, signal integrity analysis, and optical performance optimization.
