TL;DR
Field Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles): Diagnosing and repairing vehicle software and hardware faults to maintain the operational readiness of an autonomous vehicle fleet with an accent on rapid triage, safety protocols, and cross-functional support. Focus on resolving issues within a 5-minute response target, supporting 24/7 on-call operations, and improving repair processes across Tokyo and Yokohama.

Location: On-site in Tokyo, Japan, with occasional work at the Yokohama office; Monday–Sunday rota with shifts from 06:30–15:30 or 14:30–23:30, including weekends.

What you will do

  • Perform on-site fault triage, diagnosis, and repair of vehicle software and hardware issues.
  • Respond to fleet incidents within the 5-minute response target to maintain vehicle uptime.
  • Follow approved fault diagnosis, repair, safety, and compliance procedures.
  • Collaborate with field engineers, engineering, drivers, operations, and global support teams.
  • Provide repair updates and handovers across geographical locations.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and contribute to continuous improvement of field engineering processes.

Requirements

  • Japan Driver’s License required.
  • Japanese at N2 level or above and fluent English required.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, software and hardware fault triage, and repair processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot quickly while meeting strict service-level targets.
  • Understanding of safety protocols, incident management, and operational procedures.
  • Experience with diagnostic tools, software monitoring platforms such as Datadog and Mender, and JIRA.

Nice to have

  • Degree in automotive, mechanical, electrical/electronic engineering, computer science, robotics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with fleet operations, automotive systems, ADAS, or on-road testing.
  • High-voltage/EV certification and practical experience diagnosing EV systems.
  • Experience turning recurring vehicle issues into improvements in repair processes, uptime, and operational safety.
