TL;DR
Embedded Software Engineer (Aerospace): Developing mission-critical flight software for custom avionics hardware on satellite buses with an accent on low-level firmware, device drivers, onboard algorithms, and hardware integration. Location: Los Angeles, CA, USA; work is based at the Playa Vista office with in-person collaboration.

What you will do

  • Develop low-level software for processor peripherals and communication interfaces on spacecraft avionics.
  • Write and debug device drivers for satellite-bus sensors, actuators, and other components.
  • Implement onboard algorithms, including closed-loop control and fault detection and response.
  • Build iterative test code as well as rigorously reviewed and tested software for manufacturing and flight.
  • Provide embedded software input into new system and hardware designs.
  • Support spacecraft commissioning during launch and early operations.

Requirements

  • U.S. Person status or eligibility to obtain required U.S. export authorizations is required because the role involves export-controlled data.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or an equivalent qualification or professional experience.
  • 3+ years of experience writing C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Experience developing firmware for microcontrollers on bare metal or an RTOS.
  • Experience with low-level device drivers and interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, and CAN.
  • Experience integrating hardware and software, reading schematics, using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and understanding microcontroller and microprocessor architecture, memory, buses, and DMA.

Nice to have

  • 1+ year of flight software experience.
  • FPGA development and first-power-on bring-up of avionics or flight hardware.
  • Experience with satellite attitude control systems, including reaction wheels, magnetorquers, and small thrusters.
  • Experience with motors, power electronics, encoders, and current monitors.
  • Familiarity with satellite systems and protocols such as CCSDS and ECSS.
