TL;DR
Staff Flight Software Engineer (Spacecraft): Developing and testing flight software for spacecraft computers, integrating GNC algorithms, and building hardware interfaces with an accent on embedded systems, safety-critical firmware, and mission operations. Focus on designing device drivers and protocol libraries, implementing HITL/SITL simulators, and supporting command, telemetry, and sequencing systems for space missions.

Location: Onsite near Denver, CO or Long Beach, CA

Base salary: $175,000–$270,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, integrate, and test flight software for spacecraft computers and processing units.
  • Integrate complex guidance, navigation, and control algorithms with flight software.
  • Define and maintain command and telemetry databases for ground testing, on-orbit testing, and missions.
  • Collaborate with the ground command-and-control software team and support spacecraft command scripting and sequencing.
  • Design and implement satellite subsystem simulators in hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop environments.
  • Develop reusable device drivers, hardware interfaces, and communication protocol libraries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field, plus 6+ years of low-level firmware architecture, design, and development experience.
  • Experience with low-level device drivers and safety-critical systems.
  • Experience with embedded RTOS platforms such as RTLinux or Azure RTOS.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet, SPI, I2C, CAN, RS422, RS485, and similar protocols.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python.
  • Must be able to maintain or obtain TS/SCI clearance and meet U.S. space technology export requirements.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering or computer science field.
  • 12+ years of flight software development or production experience for space applications.
  • Experience with version control, continuous integration, continuous delivery, embedded Linux, UDP, and TCP/IP.
  • Experience with embedded systems tools, microcontrollers, application processors, debugging instrumentation, robotics, automation, motor control, or sensor fusion.
