Principal Engineering Standards Technical Specialist (Electrical Substation)

Location: Hybrid role based in West Sacramento, Fresno, or Oakland, California, with attendance at the assigned location two days per week or as business needs require. Travel is approximately 20–30%.

Salary: $140,000–$238,000 annually in California; Bay Area range: $147,000–$251,000 annually. The role is also eligible for discretionary incentive compensation.

What you will do

• Develop, write, publish, and maintain standards and guidance documents for substation engineering and design requirements.
• Update electric substation processes, procedures, manuals, forms, templates, and job aids, and provide training and issue support.
• Coordinate standards committees, stakeholder meetings, presentations, and regulatory clarification for legal and claims teams.
• Develop documentation for customer generation systems interconnecting to the electric system.
• Act as a liaison across engineering, planning, protection, automation, transmission, distribution, operations, IT, and telecommunications groups.
• Support document management, technical libraries, tracking systems, SharePoint sites, applications, and engineering knowledge databases.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited college, or equivalent education and experience.
• At least 13 years of relevant electrical utility engineering and design experience, preferably in substation engineering.
• Experience collaborating with construction specialists, inspectors, contractors, and operations personnel.
• Ability to work with technical documentation, standards management, training, process improvement, and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Ability to travel approximately 20–30% of the time and attend the assigned California location as required.

Nice to have

• Master of Science in Engineering.
• Up to 20 years of job-related experience, including substation engineering or design.
• Experience in strategy consulting, project management, or product management.
• SharePoint design, administration, and management experience.
• Professional Engineer license.
