Industrial Engineering Intern (Summer 2027) (Aerospace)

Location: Full-time, on-site in San Jose, California; summer internship runs between May and September 2027 depending on university schedules. The position is subject to U.S. export-control eligibility requirements.

Pay range: $40/hour for Bachelor's students, $45/hour for Master's students, and $50/hour for PhD students.

What you will do

• Analyze spacecraft assembly, integration, and test processes to improve efficiency, quality, throughput, and scalability.
• Develop process maps, standard work, work instructions, manufacturing documentation, dashboards, and operational reports.
• Collect and analyze production data, conduct time studies, and identify bottlenecks, constraints, cycle-time trends, and process inefficiencies.
• Support capacity planning, production scheduling, workflow optimization, resource allocation, and material-flow improvements across AIT operations.
• Develop and implement lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives, including root-cause investigations and corrective actions.
• Partner with technicians and engineers to validate process improvements on the production floor and scale systems for increasing spacecraft production volume.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or a related technical field.
• Strong engineering, manufacturing, or operations fundamentals with analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with Excel or similar tools for data analysis, modeling, and visualization.
• Ability to work hands-on in a production, laboratory, or engineering environment.
• Strong communication, organization, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
• Must work full-time on-site in San Jose, California and meet applicable U.S. export-control access requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, value-stream mapping, time studies, capacity analysis, line balancing, or process optimization.
• Experience with production planning, scheduling, resource capacity modeling, Python, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, CAD, or facility and workstation layout tools.
• Experience with dashboards, automated spreadsheets, CubeSat or rocketry projects, complex electromechanical hardware, cleanrooms, laboratories, or aerospace manufacturing.
