TL;DR
Sensing Systems Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles): Define sensing requirements, metrics, experiments, and validation criteria for vehicle platforms supporting Wayve’s AI Driver, with an accent on sensor performance, calibration, synchronization, and system-level trade-offs. Focus on analysing how sensing characteristics and failure modes affect model inputs and driving behaviour, designing validation scenarios, and driving technical decisions across hardware, software, ML, validation, and product teams.

Location: Sunnyvale, California, USA; hybrid work with in-person collaboration in offices, workshops, labs, and vehicle environments.

Salary: Senior $209,700–$266,800; Staff $276,100–$311,400.

Company

hirify.global builds an AI platform for autonomous driving, combining machine learning, robotics, vehicle software, simulation, and data systems to support scalable vehicle autonomy from L2+ through L4.

What you will do

  • Define sensing-system requirements, metrics, acceptance criteria, and validation gates for new and existing vehicle platforms.
  • Translate driving behaviours and product use cases into measurable sensor needs and challenging validation scenarios.
  • Design experiments with hardware, ML, and validation teams and analyse the resulting data.
  • Assess how sensor characteristics, placement, calibration, synchronization, and defects affect model inputs and driving behaviour.
  • Make and document trade-offs across performance, cost, compute, packaging, reliability, and schedule.
  • Drive cross-functional technical decisions across robotics, hardware, vehicle software, ML, validation, and product.

Requirements

  • Deep technical knowledge of at least one sensing modality used in robotics or autonomous vehicles.
  • Strong systems-engineering fundamentals, including requirements definition, verification, and validation.
  • Experience designing experiments and using data analysis to make technical decisions.
  • Understanding of how sensing limitations and failure modes propagate through robotic or ML systems.
  • Ability to work effectively across hardware, software, ML, validation, and product teams.
  • Broad familiarity with calibration, synchronization, sensor fusion, perception, or automotive integration is beneficial; deep ML implementation experience is not required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with cameras, lidar, radar, localization, calibration, synchronization, sensor-data quality, or automotive sensing architectures.
  • Experience evaluating sensor impact on end-to-end driving performance and OEM or customer sensing configurations.

Culture & Benefits

  • Hybrid working with hands-on access to vehicles, workshops, and labs.
  • Relocation support and visa sponsorship where applicable.
  • Market-benchmarked salaries, meaningful equity, and location-dependent health, family, retirement, and wellbeing benefits.
  • Learning and development support.
  • Opportunity to shape processes and ways of working in a developing organisation.

Hiring process

  • Recruiter screen lasting 25 minutes.
  • Initial technical screen covering experience, systems thinking, and cross-functional leadership, followed by deep dives into sensor fundamentals, ML–sensor interfaces, architecture, systems engineering, and technical leadership.
  • Final interview covering values and mission alignment.
