Director, Battery Engineering

Location: Alameda, California, United States; onsite. The role requires operating equipment in a fixed location and includes up to 25% domestic and international travel.

Starting base pay: $207,000–$262,000 per year, excluding benefits, equity, bonuses, and other total rewards.

What you will do

• Lead the Battery Engineering organization across Customer Application Engineering and Cell Scaling.
• Oversee customer application engineering, cell prototype design transfer, and OEM qualification for partner platforms.
• Identify technical risks, resolve cell adoption and manufacturing bottlenecks, and manage contract manufacturing handoffs.
• Partner with Commercial, Business Development, and Product leadership to align engineering milestones with customer pipeline progression, joint development agreements, and revenue targets.
• Develop engineers through mentoring, performance management, career pathways, and organizational design.
• Establish prioritization frameworks and cross-functional workflows across R&D, Operations, Product, and Commercial functions.

Requirements

• 5+ years of direct people management experience leading engineering, science, or technical teams.
• 10+ years of battery industry experience, with 12+ years preferred, covering lithium-ion cell development, OEM qualification cycles, design transfer, and commercial-scale manufacturing or contract manufacturing.
• Experience establishing team workflows, project prioritization frameworks, and cross-functional execution processes.
• Strong communication skills and experience explaining technical trade-offs and advocating for team needs.
• B.S. or advanced degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or a related field; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
• Ability to work onsite in Alameda and wear required personal protective equipment, including a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toe safety shoes.
