Spring 2027 Software Engineering Internship/Co-op (AI)

Location: Palo Alto, California, United States; full-time onsite for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning in January or March 2027

Salary: $30–$40 USD per hour, determined by academic level

xAI develops AI systems designed to understand the universe and support scientific discovery, including the Grok frontier AI model and Starmind space-based infrastructure.

What you will do

• Contribute to software engineering projects with significant impact under the guidance of a mentor.
• Develop software using one or more of C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
• Apply software engineering knowledge to AI systems and space-based infrastructure projects.
• Debug, optimize performance, and write unit tests.
• Create software documentation, system diagrams, and software requirements.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in a bachelor's degree or graduate program.
• At least 3 months of software programming or development experience.
• Experience coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
• Ability to work full time onsite for at least 12 consecutive weeks beginning in January or March 2027.
• Strong communication, prioritization, initiative, and teamwork skills.

Nice to have

• GPA of 3.5 or above.
• At least 6 months of experience developing and deploying software used in real-world applications or projects.
• Knowledge of computer architecture and networks.
• Experience with debugging, performance optimization, unit testing, software documentation, system diagrams, and software requirements.
