Staff Software Engineer (OLAP)

What you will do

• Build and evolve Nova’s query planning, execution, columnar storage, encoding, caching, and distributed compute infrastructure.
• Extend the engine to support additional warehouse-imported data types and high-throughput automated query workloads.
• Reduce compute, storage, network, and memory costs while improving latency and throughput.
• Optimize JVM performance, including garbage collection, memory management, concurrency, and data layout.
• Improve production reliability through observability, capacity planning, safe rollouts, incident response, and durable architectural fixes.
• Lead multi-month projects, influence technical direction, mentor engineers, and collaborate across engineering and product teams.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend or infrastructure engineering experience with distributed data systems.
• Hands-on experience building or extending OLAP engines, query processors, columnar databases, or large-scale data processing systems.
• Experience driving cloud infrastructure cost optimization at scale.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, algorithms, concurrency, multithreading, and performance optimization.
• Production experience with AWS, Kafka, Redis or ElastiCache, Kubernetes, Terraform, or equivalent technologies.
• Proficiency in Java, C++, or Python, plus experience leading technical discussions and mentoring engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with Druid, ClickHouse, Presto/Trino, BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar systems.
• Deep JVM expertise, including garbage collection tuning, profiling, and memory optimization.
• Experience with Arrow, Parquet, ORC, or custom columnar formats.
• Background in product analytics, experimentation platforms, event-driven data systems, or open-source data infrastructure.
