Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Online Storage)

Location: Remote in Canada; candidates must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.

Base pay: 153,000–213,000 CAD per year

What you will do

• Build and operate control-plane automation for large-scale MySQL and TiDB databases, including provisioning, failover, backups, and upgrades.
• Design and execute zero-downtime schema and data migrations across multi-tenant database clusters.
• Own the Kubernetes networking stack connecting services to storage, including ProxySQL, and optimize latency, resilience, and failover.
• Define quarterly goals, lead engineers through ambiguous technical problems, and support delivery.
• Monitor reliability and availability through metrics, on-call operations, and operational runbooks.
• Improve engineering quality through code review standards, design practices, documentation, and technical talks.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using technologies such as Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Terraform, and Kubernetes.
• Hands-on experience with large-scale production database deployments and distributed database technologies, including MySQL, TiDB, Postgres, Spanner, Vitess, or CockroachDB.
• Strong understanding of distributed database architecture, data modeling, SQL tuning, performance optimization, benchmarking, load testing, and capacity planning.
• Experience with connection poolers and proxies such as ProxySQL, RDS Proxy, PgBouncer, or PgDog, plus Kubernetes networking, service discovery, and TLS.
• Equivalent practical experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
