Staff Software Engineer, Query Engine (Rust)

Location: United States; open to remote or hybrid work. Hybrid hubs are available in San Francisco, New York City, and Chicago.

Annual base pay: $225,000–$265,000 in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City; $196,000–$230,000 in other US locations.

What you will do

• Design, build, and optimize Burrow’s distributed query execution, indexing, and storage layers in Rust.
• Develop query APIs, semantic layers, and serving patterns for AI products, agents, and customer-facing applications.
• Improve latency, throughput, memory usage, storage access, reliability, observability, and cost efficiency across the query fleet.
• Lead migrations from legacy query systems to Burrow and expand support for provider data, provider-level trends, and top-K analytics.
• Partner with data engineering, product, platform, data science, quality, and AI teams to deliver production-grade systems.
• Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives, mentor engineers, and raise standards for architecture, testing, CI/CD, documentation, and operational readiness.

Requirements

• Experience writing and operating high-performance systems code in Rust, Erlang, or C++.
• Deep knowledge of analytical query engines, including columnar formats, indexing and pruning, compression, compaction, query planning, execution, and low-latency serving.
• Experience with engines such as Pinot, Druid, ClickHouse, DuckDB, DataFusion, or Trino.
• Ability to design architectures and data-serving systems for complex, high-volume environments and lead technical direction across teams.
• Experience building infrastructure for AI/ML systems, LLM-driven products, or high-volume real-time traffic.
• Hands-on use of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, or Claude in engineering work.

Nice to have

• Healthcare data experience involving claims, clinical, real-world evidence, provider, patient, or life sciences data.
• Experience migrating workloads from Redshift, Snowflake, or similar warehouses to purpose-built serving infrastructure.
• Experience with high-scale data architecture, newer columnar formats, or applied AI and agentic workflows.
• Experience working in fast-growth or ambiguous environments.
