TL;DR
Director, Strategic Initiatives (Strategic Planning/Board Governance): Leading cross-functional organizational initiatives, executive communications, annual planning, and Board of Trustees operations with an accent on strategic execution, governance, and stakeholder coordination. Focus on designing organizational systems, managing complex projects, and building processes that support the Co-CEOs and scale impact across a nonprofit education network.

Location: New York, NY, USA; at least three days each week in the Manhattan office at 100 Church St. Minimal travel is required for quarterly school visits or routine local travel.

Salary: USD 111,200–139,000 per year. Typical starting compensation for fully qualified new hires is USD 118,200.

What you will do

  • Partner with the Co-CEOs on strategic projects, organizational priorities, and special initiatives.
  • Lead cross-functional annual planning with senior leaders across Finance, Talent, Operations, School Operations, and Strategic Initiatives.
  • Manage Board of Trustees governance, meetings, communications, surveys, committee work, and the Board scorecard.
  • Design processes for sharing information between the Uncommon Board and regional boards.
  • Lead Co-CEO communications and manage the annual State of Uncommon presentation.
  • Manage and develop the Specialist supporting Strategic Initiatives and Executive Operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5–6 years of directly relevant or transferable professional experience in strategic initiatives, special projects, project management, executive support, operations, nonprofit leadership, or related areas.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including adapting messages for different audiences.
  • Experience managing and developing others and building strong teams.
  • Ability to work through ambiguity and bring structure to undefined problems.

Nice to have

  • Master's degree in business administration, public administration, nonprofit management, or a related field.
  • Experience in education, nonprofits, or mission-driven organizations.
  • Experience with board governance or executive-level operations.
  • Proficiency with project management tools and data analysis, including Excel.
