Chief SW Engineer (AI)

Location: Foster City, California, United States; at least 3 days per week in the office required. The role is performed in an office setting and requires 5–10% travel.

Salary: $230,500–$369,400 USD per year, plus potential bonus and equity.

What you will do

• Define the technical roadmap and architecture standards for enterprise AI platforms and agentic capabilities.
• Design and build production systems using LLM applications, RAG, multi-agent workflows, tool calling, and hybrid ML and generative AI.
• Develop shared AI platform services for model access, retrieval, evaluation, observability, prompt and model versioning, and deployment.
• Establish LLMOps and AIOps practices, including evaluation harnesses, tracing, cost telemetry, drift detection, SLOs, rollback, and incident response.
• Build SDKs, templates, CI/CD workflows, and internal tooling that help engineering teams ship AI features safely.
• Partner with product, security, privacy, risk, compliance, legal, and engineering teams to move use cases from prototypes into regulated production.

Requirements

• At least 12 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree, 9 years with an advanced degree, 6 years with a PhD, or 15+ years of relevant experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Expertise in Python and strong experience with TypeScript, Java, or Go, plus rigorous testing, observability, API design, data pipelines, and infrastructure as code.
• Production experience with generative AI stacks, including foundation model APIs, RAG, vector search, tool use, agent orchestration, and evaluation frameworks.
• Experience designing internal developer or ML platforms, operating AI systems at enterprise scale, and working in regulated industries such as payments or financial services.
• Strong communication skills for executive forums and engineering collaboration, including architecture decision records and risk briefs.

Nice to have

• Experience with LangGraph or equivalent agent frameworks, MCP-style tool protocols, and multi-agent patterns.
• Experience with feature stores, model registries, experiment tracking, and online or offline evaluation pipelines.
• Experience with AI governance engineering, including policy-as-code, PII handling, model cards, access minimization, and audit trails.
• Background in payments, commerce, fraud, risk, identity, or large-scale transaction systems.
• Open-source contributions, published technical writing, platform adoption metrics, or experience leading forward-deployed AI tiger teams.
