TL;DR
Technician (Laboratory) (Civil/Mechanical Engineering): Supporting teaching and research laboratories through equipment fabrication, testing, maintenance, procurement, and user training with an accent on hydraulic testing, chemistry instrumentation, and laboratory safety. Focus on building test fixtures, troubleshooting and servicing complex equipment, coordinating installations, and training students and research assistants in safe operation.

Location: hirify.global Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada

Salary: $5,519.00–$6,326.00 CAD monthly

What you will do

  • Support civil and mechanical engineering teaching and research laboratories, coordinating laboratory schedules and safety requirements.
  • Fabricate and assemble test fixtures and samples using sketches, schematics, drawings, and researcher instructions.
  • Operate, test, troubleshoot, service, and maintain hydraulic testing machines, chemistry instruments, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Develop and improve laboratory experiments, install equipment, coordinate repairs, and support minor laboratory renovations and capital projects.
  • Coordinate equipment and consumables procurement, vendor quotations, deliveries, inventories, purchasing, and credit card reconciliation.
  • Train graduate students, teaching assistants, faculty, and other users in equipment operation, laboratory procedures, and safety.

Requirements

  • Postsecondary degree in civil or mechanical engineering.
  • More than two years of experience in a private-sector or educational laboratory environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to perform complex technical tasks independently with minimal supervision, exercise judgment, and resolve technical problems.
  • Experience or ability to work with laboratory equipment, machinery, instrumentation, maintenance procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, customer service, organizational, prioritization, and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to understand and implement university safety policies, WHMIS, GHS, and laboratory operating procedures.

Nice to have

  • First Aid and WHMIS certification.
  • Experience training students or colleagues in laboratory equipment and experiments.
