Staff ATE Mechanical Engineer (Contractor)

Location: Mountain View, California, United States; onsite role with approximately 10–20% travel to domestic and international contract manufacturing sites.

Hourly compensation: $72–$85 USD per hour, depending on experience, level, geographic location, and business considerations.

What you will do

• Lead mechanical product development from concept and analysis through prototype, production, and deployment.
• Design reliable, high-performance, manufacturable parts, assemblies, test fixtures, jigs, and electromechanical systems.
• Create and review 2D drawings, specifications, bills of materials, cost and mass roll-ups, and engineering releases.
• Define manufacturing processes, inspection methods, work instructions, preventive maintenance documentation, and production support procedures.
• Collaborate with electrical, automated test, manufacturing, supplier, and technician teams to evaluate designs and resolve technical issues.
• Work directly with component manufacturers during prototyping, onsite builds, first article inspection, and production approval.

Requirements

• Extensive experience with 3D modeling software such as Onshape, NX, or SolidWorks.
• Strong knowledge of 2D drawing creation, GD&T, tolerance analysis, statics and load path analysis, finite element analysis, root cause analysis, and design failure mode and effects analysis.
• Experience designing PCBA bed-of-nails fixtures, test fixtures, jigs, fine-pitch assemblies, and high-cycle-count mechanical components.
• Experience with strain gauge measurements, PCBA mechanical control outlines, electromechanical troubleshooting, pneumatic cylinders, and thermal management.
• Prototyping experience with 3D printing, machining, sheet metal bending, laser cutting, milling, and general machine shop tools.
• Experience with supplier communication, design for manufacturing reviews, first article inspection, part production approval processes, process FMEA, and onsite manufacturing support.

Nice to have

• Experience collaborating with cross-functional engineering, manufacturing, vendor, and technician teams on projects from design through deployment.
• Ability to create concise technical slide decks and provide clear, constructive feedback.
