TL;DR
Staff Mechanical Engineer (Fusion Energy): Designing and implementing advanced R&D equipment and complex machinery for thin-film deposition with an accent on mechanical subsystem ownership, design reviews, and safe, reliable equipment performance. Focus on developing first-of-kind engineering systems, qualifying vendors, applying FEA and mechanical standards, and mentoring engineering staff.

Location: Milpitas, California, United States; on-site

Salary: $130,000–$200,000 per year, plus equity and benefits

What you will do

  • Lead the design and implementation of advanced R&D equipment for thin-film processing.
  • Own key mechanical modules and subsystems and lead related design reviews.
  • Define and maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems.
  • Track project progress and report status to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers across disciplines.
  • Mentor engineering staff and drive timely, in-spec project delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent industrial experience.
  • 10+ years of experience, including 8+ years as a staff mechanical design engineer or engineering team lead working on R&D systems and manufacturing equipment.
  • Expertise in 3D modeling; experience with SolidWorks and NX is preferred.
  • Experience with COMSOL, ANSYS, or other FEA tools.
  • Ability to develop complex engineering solutions, select and qualify vendors, and lead in direct or matrix structures.
  • Ability to work on-site in Milpitas and occasionally travel, work nights or weekends, or be on call. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work safely around industrial hazards including high voltage, cryogenics, strong magnets, fumes, and lead.

Nice to have

  • Experience building first-of-kind or experimental tools for materials science or semiconductor R&D.
  • Familiarity with Semi-S8, ASME, ACI, ASTM, and other mechanical standards.
  • Experience operating equipment in a manufacturing environment.
