Associate Vice President, External Communications (Media Relations): Leading enterprise media relations, issues management, crisis communications, and reputation protection for a cancer research and care institute with an accent on executive advising, proactive media engagement, and coordinated external messaging. Focus on managing high-profile communications challenges, building strategic media partnerships, measuring reputational impact, and developing a high-performing communications team.
Location: Boston, MA; hybrid work with 2–3 days onsite per week. On-call availability and some evening and weekend work are required.
Salary: $221,400–$249,000 per year.

What you will do
- Lead enterprise issues management, crisis communications, and reputation protection strategies.
- Develop and execute integrated media relations strategies supporting clinical, research, educational, and philanthropic priorities.
- Advise executive leaders, faculty, clinicians, and researchers on reputational risk, media engagement, executive visibility, storytelling, and interview preparation.
- Direct proactive media outreach, story development, pitching, press events, and strategic communications campaigns.
- Build relationships with journalists, editors, producers, media influencers, and other external stakeholders while monitoring the media landscape.
- Establish performance measures, report on media impact, and hire, coach, and manage the external communications team.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, English, or a related field.
- 12+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in media relations, public affairs, strategic communications, or corporate communications.
- Substantial experience leading issues management, crisis communications, and reputation management in complex organizations.
- Demonstrated success developing enterprise media strategies and advising executive leaders, physicians, researchers, and subject matter experts.
- Outstanding written, verbal, presentation, analytical, management, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement with 2–3 onsite days per week in Boston, plus on-call evening and weekend availability.
