Research Engineer IV (HVAC Testing)

What you will do

• Manage the day-to-day technical operations of the Indoor Environments Lab in coordination with laboratory leadership and external stakeholders.
• Lead fan and HVAC performance testing under ANSI/AMCA 210, ASHRAE 51, HVI Publications 915, 916, and 920, AHRI Standard 430, and the US EPA Energy Star program.
• Own the ISO/IEC 17025 quality management system, including documentation control, internal audits, calibration oversight, and accreditation preparation.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate graduate assistants, technicians, and junior engineering staff while coordinating laboratory schedules and safety programs.
• Review and approve quotes, agreements, invoices, status reports, and final test reports, serving as the primary technical contact for clients and sponsors.
• Support proposals, grant applications, technical manuscripts, equipment procurement, instrumentation management, and client specimen logistics.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least six years of related experience.
• Advanced knowledge of engineering research principles, testing methodologies, laboratory systems, and quality assurance.
• Strong familiarity with mechanical and electrical machinery, instrumentation, airflow test apparatus, and HVAC performance testing.
• Ability to independently lead test programs, interpret research data, make recommendations, and approve technical deliverables.
• Employment requires completion of US employment eligibility verification and authorization to work in the United States.

Nice to have

• Experience with ANSI/AMCA 210, ASHRAE 51, HVI Publications 915, 916, and 920, or AHRI Standard 430.
• Experience in an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, including quality or technical manager responsibilities.
• Machining, fabrication, mechanical design, or test rig operation experience.
• Prior supervisory, team leadership, training, proposal development, grant writing, or technical publication experience.
