Principal HTS Magnet Engineer (Fusion)

hirify.global is developing commercial fusion energy through stellarator systems that use computer-controlled arrays of planar coils and advanced superconducting magnet technology.

What you will do

• Own the full lifecycle of large-scale high-temperature superconducting cabled magnet systems.
• Lead system design reviews, subsystem qualification, site commissioning, and risk mitigation across multi-year fusion hardware projects.
• Specify and optimize high-current REBCO/CICC conductors, including thermomechanical stresses, high-field Lorentz forces, and thermal quench propagation.
• Direct electro-mechanical integration of power leads, quench detection, cryogenic cooling interfaces, and structural supports.
• Oversee HTS tape and cable vendors, manufacturing facilities, and integration test platforms.
• Lead full-scale magnet testing, cryogenic qualification, post-test forensics, and program lifecycle milestones.

Requirements

• 10–15 years of direct experience with high-field HTS cabled magnets or LTS CICC conductors for fusion applications.
• Experience delivering major fusion or other complex magnet programs, including ownership of milestones and budgets of $10M–$50M.
• Hands-on experience with full-scale magnet testing, cryogenic qualification at 4.2K–20K, and failure analysis.
• Knowledge of REBCO 2G-HTS mechanics, current distribution, AC losses, tape-to-cable joints, quench protection, and diagnostics.
• Experience with multiphysics engineering, including electromagnetic forces, structural stress, thermal management, and helium flow.
• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, or nuclear engineering; proficiency with relevant modeling tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, OPERA, or MATLAB/Simulink.

Nice to have

• Experience in a fast-growing startup.
• Large-scale magnet manufacturing experience involving forgings, composite insulation, and solder potting at 1–10 m length scales.
• Experience with CONOPS, interface control documentation, requirements traceability, and cross-functional electrical/mechanical leadership.
