TL;DR
Principal Magnet Cryogenics Engineer (HTS/Fusion): Leading the complete lifecycle of large-scale high-temperature superconducting magnet cryogenic systems for next-generation fusion reactors with an accent on thermal-hydraulic design, cryogenic plant integration, and quench management. Focus on modelling transient loads, designing forced-flow cooling and helium systems, integrating high-current joints and leads, and commissioning multi-million-dollar magnet hardware.

Location: Kearny, New Jersey, United States; on-site

Salary: $190,000–$215,000 per year

Company

hirify.global is developing commercial fusion energy using stellarator physics and computer-controlled arrays of planar coils.

What you will do

  • Own the full lifecycle of large-scale HTS fusion magnet cryogenic systems from concept and design through fabrication, commissioning, and decommissioning.
  • Design and validate gaseous helium and sub-cooled liquid nitrogen thermal-management systems for CICC and stacked-tape HTS conductors.
  • Perform dynamic thermal-hydraulic modelling, transient load analysis, margin calculations, and quench-response design.
  • Define requirements for megawatt-class cryogenic plants, compressors, heat exchangers, valve boxes, sub-coolers, and low-heat-leak transfer lines.
  • Oversee cryogenic management of high-current HTS joints and gas-cooled hybrid current leads rated at 60+ kA.
  • Lead vendors, multidisciplinary engineering teams, verification campaigns, cool-down, high-current testing, and operational validation.

Requirements

  • 10–15+ years of direct cryogenic engineering and thermal-hydraulic design experience for superconducting magnet systems.
  • Expertise in HTS tape and cable architectures, including REBCO, BSCCO, CICC, stacked-tape conductors, and forced-flow cooling.
  • Experience delivering large-scale fusion or scientific-facility magnet programs and at least one system from concept through initial cool-down and operational validation.
  • Knowledge of pressure-vessel and piping standards including ASME BPVC Section VIII, EN 13445, B31.3, ISO 21010, and CGA standards.
  • Proficiency with FEA and thermal-hydraulic modelling tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS Thermal/CFD, and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams, prepare SRDs and ICDs, conduct design reviews, mentor engineers, and apply FMEA to cryogenic failure scenarios.

Culture & Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Employee equity stock options.
  • 20 days of paid time off.
  • Equal opportunity workplace committed to diversity and inclusion.
  • AI tools may support parts of the hiring process, with final decisions made by humans.
