Staff Software Developer (AI)

Location: Toronto, Canada

Base pay: CAD 164,500–222,500 per year, plus potential bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Set architectural direction across multiple HCM engineering teams, services, and integration boundaries.
• Identify and resolve technical constraints affecting velocity, reliability, and customer experience.
• Lead modernization and re-platforming strategy for live systems, including sequencing, migration paths, and risk management.
• Define architecture for AI-powered and agentic capabilities, including shared services, retrieval, orchestration, evaluations, guardrails, fallback behavior, and observability.
• Raise engineering standards through design reviews, technical mentorship, CI/CD, operational readiness, and code health.
• Drive systemic improvements in reliability, latency, security, privacy, data governance, and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
• Staff-level experience setting technical direction adopted across multiple teams.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, service architecture, API design, and relational and non-relational data modeling.
• Production depth in a backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, or Node, with working knowledge of a modern frontend framework, ideally React.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, containers, orchestration, CI/CD, and production AI systems including LLM-backed features, retrieval-augmented architectures, or agentic workflows.

Nice to have

• Experience in HR technology, payroll, workforce management, fintech, or other financially material and auditable domains.
• Experience with rules engines, calculation or ledger-style systems, configurable workflows, or modernization of revenue-bearing legacy systems.
• Experience building shared AI platform or evaluation infrastructure used by multiple teams.
• Knowledge of SOC 2, GDPR, PIPEDA, CCPA, and employment compliance requirements.
