Staff Software Engineer (Pre-ID Relo)

Location: Toronto, Canada

Base pay: CAD 164,500–222,500 per year, with potential bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Set architectural direction across multiple HCM engineering teams, services, and organizational boundaries.
• Define service boundaries, integration contracts, technical strategies, and architecture decision records.
• Lead modernization and re-platforming of live systems, including sequencing, migration paths, and risk management.
• Own architecture for AI-powered and agentic capabilities, including retrieval, orchestration, shared services, evaluation, guardrails, and observability.
• Raise engineering quality through design reviews, technical mentorship, operational readiness, CI/CD, reliability, security, and code health.
• Drive resolution of complex incidents and systemic issues involving performance, compliance, privacy, and data governance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
• Staff-level experience setting technical direction across multiple teams and influencing without formal authority.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, service architecture, API design, and relational and non-relational data modeling.
• Production experience with a backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, or Node, plus working knowledge of React or another modern frontend framework.
• Experience with AWS or GCP, containers, orchestration, CI/CD, production AI systems, evaluation infrastructure, and AI-first engineering practices.

Nice to have

• Experience in HR technology, payroll, workforce management, fintech, or other compliance-sensitive domains.
• Experience with rules engines, calculation or ledger systems, workflow platforms, or modernization of live legacy systems.
• Experience building shared AI platforms, technical governance, frontend architecture, or systems handling employee data and regulatory requirements.
• Previous Staff or Principal experience in a mid-to-large technology company.
