TL;DR
Design Engineer (Drivetrain & Transmissions) (Mechanical Engineering/Drivetrain): Designing and releasing drivetrain components and transmission systems for wheel loaders, telehandlers, and backhoe loaders with an accent on computer-aided design, technical analysis, durability, and product validation. Focus on solving complex engineering issues, evaluating design risks, and refining production-ready solutions through prototype builds, testing, and collaboration with manufacturing and global engineering teams.

Location: Desford, Leicestershire, United Kingdom; onsite five days a week. Domestic relocation support may be considered for exceptional candidates. Up to 10% international travel is required.

Salary: £49,500–£61,000 depending on demonstrated skills.

What you will do

  • Translate customer and functional requirements into drivetrain component and transmission system designs.
  • Create, analyse, and release three-dimensional models, assemblies, components, and engineering documentation using computer-aided design tools.
  • Investigate complex technical issues, identify root causes, and develop solutions balancing performance, quality, durability, and cost.
  • Evaluate design risks and use prototype, verification, testing, and validation results to refine engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, purchasing, and global engineering teams on new products and product improvements.
  • Plan concurrent engineering activities and communicate progress, risks, technical findings, and recommendations.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent applied engineering knowledge.
  • Extensive experience creating, analysing, and communicating complex mechanical components, assemblies, and three-dimensional designs using specialised engineering tools.
  • Strong analytical thinking and the ability to identify root causes, evaluate risks, and make evidence-based engineering decisions.
  • Working knowledge of product design and development from concept through validation and production release.
  • Ability to manage concurrent engineering activities, changing priorities, risks, and multiple assignments.
  • Ability to work onsite in Desford five days per week and undertake up to 10% international travel.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of transmissions, gears, shafts, bearings, housings, wet clutches, or hydraulic integration.
  • Experience with prototype builds, design verification, testing, manufacturability, assembly, quality, and product launch.
