Android Engineer (Kotlin)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco or New York City, United States; office attendance required on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Salary: $150,000–$168,000 base salary per year for roles based in San Francisco.

What you will do

• Build and polish Notion's core Android experiences, including page reading, writing, editing, navigation, Home, Search, and Inbox.
• Develop on a native Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack focused on fast startup, smooth scrolling, and reliable offline use.
• Partner with product managers and designers to turn ideas into shipped features and improve them using feedback and data.
• Use AI coding tools and agents to build, test, investigate, and improve engineering workflows while maintaining review and quality standards.
• Own a core product area from concept through launch during the first year.
• Diagnose and fix startup, scrolling, typing latency, crash, and memory issues, while adding tests and monitoring to prevent regressions.

Requirements

• Experience building and shipping Android applications through professional work, internships, or personal projects.
• Strong knowledge of Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, and Gradle.
• Interest in native UI quality, performance, product details, and user experience.
• Ability to analyze problems, communicate trade-offs clearly in writing, and ask for help when needed.
• Experience using AI tools and agents as engineering collaborators, including reviewing generated changes and testing behavior.
• Ability and willingness to work from the San Francisco or New York City office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Nice to have

• Experience with large, modular codebases, performance profiling, real-time collaboration, or offline synchronization.
• Experience with custom text rendering, complex lazy lists, or rich-text editing.
• Experience moving hybrid or web-based surfaces to native or building products from 0 to 1.
• Web experience with TypeScript, React, or Node.
• Experience with the shared Rust layer or mobile AI development tools.
