Records Retrieval Specialist (Healthcare)

Location: Remote Virginia, with residence required in Smyth County or bordering counties including Russell, Tazewell, Bland, Wythe, Grayson, or Washington. The role includes field travel of up to 75% to provider offices and occasional overnight stays. Work hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm EST.

Salary: $40,000–$52,300 per year.

What you will do

• Conduct quality assurance audits and retrieve medical records and ICD-9/10 diagnosis documentation for CMS and other government agencies.
• Collect, validate, reconcile, and upload verified records to the Cotiviti centralized repository.
• Obtain required provider signatures and conduct high-volume phone and email outreach to physician offices.
• Use company-issued laptops, portable scanners, and encrypted storage devices to securely manage protected health information.
• Maintain accuracy, confidentiality, HIPAA compliance, productivity, and service-level expectations while working independently.

Requirements

• Residence in Smyth County, Virginia, or a bordering county is required.
• Extensive travel of up to 75% and occasional overnight stays are required.
• At least one year of experience in customer service, medical records, and Microsoft 365 applications.
• Experience managing high-volume workloads, communicating with internal and external partners, and working in healthcare or managed care.
• Valid state driver's license, reliable transportation, and required personal vehicle liability insurance.
• A dedicated work area and reliable internet with at least 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload are required to protect PHI and HIPAA information.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of ICD-9/10 codes and medical terminology.
• Experience with electronic medical record systems.
• Additional healthcare or managed care experience.
