Head of Data (AI)

Location: San Francisco, United States; hybrid

Salary: $200,000–$240,000 base salary plus equity

What you will do

• Build Vapi’s data function from scratch and own the company-wide single source of truth for metrics such as ARR, NRR, churn, call volume, latency, and reliability.
• Define canonical data models and measure the full GTM funnel from signup and first call through activation, pipeline stages, adoption, expansion, and retention.
• Own the modern data stack, including the warehouse, ingestion, transformation, orchestration, business intelligence, dbt models, and data contracts.
• Design scalable pipelines for call telemetry, transcript events, usage metering, billing signals, model performance traces, and AI/LLM observability.
• Build self-serve semantic layers and dashboards for Sales, Finance, Customer Success, Product, and Engineering, while running data-driven weekly and monthly business reviews.
• Hire and lead the first data engineers and analysts, manage vendor relationships, and partner with Finance, GTM, Product, Engineering, Security, and Legal.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in data, analytics, or data engineering, including building or leading a data function at a high-growth technology company.
• Experience establishing and maintaining a company-wide single source of truth across conflicting stakeholder definitions.
• Deep experience with the modern data stack, including dbt, Databricks, Fivetran or PostHog, and a BI layer such as Hex.
• Strong SQL and experience building pipelines that handle billions of event-driven rows.
• Experience with AI or ML data infrastructure, such as feature stores, model evaluation pipelines, or LLM observability.
• Strong communication, judgment, and collaboration skills across Finance, Product, Engineering, and GTM.

Nice to have

• Experience as a first or founding data leader at a Series A–C company.
• Background with developer-facing platforms, API businesses, or usage-based SaaS.
• Experience with usage-based billing, revenue metering, HIPAA or GDPR compliance, or externally facing data products.
