Emergency Country Director (Humanitarian Response)

Location: Global roving; field deployment to an emergency site within 72 hours of notification.

What you will do

• Lead country programs during emergency responses, setting strategic direction and coordinating program delivery.
• Oversee program quality, accountability, monitoring, evaluation, learning, and partner capacity strengthening.
• Manage staff leadership, coaching, performance development, succession planning, and staff well-being.
• Oversee security, evacuation, contingency planning, operational risk management, and staff safety.
• Manage donor-funded budgets, financial controls, compliance systems, reporting, and operational efficiency.
• Represent IRC with government ministries, UN agencies, donors, NGOs, and local partners while supporting fundraising and humanitarian coordination.

Requirements

• At least 12 years of progressively responsible international work experience, including Country Director-level leadership of multi-site, multi-sector operations in complex environments.
• Experience in conflict, post-conflict, or disaster response situations and in managing rapidly changing security contexts.
• Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, partnership-building, fundraising, budget oversight, and risk-management skills.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams in cross-cultural settings and developing senior and high-potential staff.
• Professional fluency in written and spoken English.
• Ability to deploy to an emergency site within 72 hours of notification and work in the field.

Nice to have

• Graduate degree in a relevant field.
• Working knowledge of French, Arabic, and/or Spanish.
• Experience working within organizations undergoing transition.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office, file-sharing tools, and platforms such as Dropbox or SharePoint.
