Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Search)

Location: Remote within the United States; occasional in-person work and an in-person onboarding experience may be required.

Base pay: $230,000–$290,000 for CA, WA, NY, NJ, and CT; $204,000–$264,000 for other U.S. states.

What you will do

• Set the team’s technical strategy and connect it to business-impacting projects.
• Build and evolve search, recommendation, discovery, and marketplace experiences.
• Collaborate with product management, design, analytics, and engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.
• Own operational readiness, including monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, testing, alerting, and on-call support.
• Establish code review and design standards, and share technical guidance through writing and talks.
• Develop engineering talent through feedback, guidance, and technical leadership.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale.
• Strong experience with highly available distributed systems and technologies such as Python or Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• 2+ years of experience in search or related recommendation engines.
• Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecations through technical and execution planning.
• Experience with consumer experiences and UI frameworks such as React.
• Equivalent practical experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field; strong written and verbal communication skills.
