Senior Software Engineer (Fusion Energy)

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain software for plant control, diagnostics, automation, and operator workflows.
• Develop interfaces connecting distributed sensors, actuators, controllers, databases, and visualization tools.
• Build monitoring, machine-health, system-performance, test-execution, and plant-operations tools.
• Create graphical user interfaces for engineers, operators, and scientists working with fusion machines and testbeds.
• Architect software for real-time control, data acquisition, and system coordination.
• Integrate software with complex hardware in collaboration with electrical, firmware, mechanical, IT, operations, and science teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, physics, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience and end-to-end ownership of complex software projects.
• Strong programming ability in C++, Rust, or a similar systems programming language, plus Python or another high-level orchestration language.
• Experience building software for hardware, sensors, instruments, control systems, or other real-world systems.
• Comfort working in Linux and applying testing, version control, debugging, deployment, and full-lifecycle development practices.
• Willingness to work onsite in Everett and stay close to the hardware, operators, and system users.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed control systems, industrial automation, SCADA, PLCs, machine control, or the V-model of development.
• Knowledge of precision timing, synchronization, PTP, deterministic systems, embedded Linux, real-time systems, or low-level programming.
• Experience with time-series databases, data pipelines, dashboards, data-rich GUIs, InfluxDB, or Grafana.
• Experience with Docker, CI/CD, configuration management, or deployment automation.
• Background in high-energy systems, aerospace, robotics, manufacturing, power systems, or scientific instrumentation.
