TL;DR
Thermal-Hydraulics Engineer 4 (Nuclear) (RELAP/VIPRE): Performing and reviewing system-level and subchannel thermal-hydraulic analyses for SMR safety evaluations, reload analyses, product development, and customer projects with an accent on licensed methods, CHF predictions, and design-basis events. Focus on leading cross-functional reviews, maintaining thermal-hydraulic methods, adapting analyses to international regulatory frameworks, and solving complex multiphysics challenges.

Location: Remote within the contiguous United States for individuals living beyond a 30-mile radius of a physical NuScale office

Target salary: $127,104–$153,401 annually; full salary range: $113,955–$178,237 annually

What you will do

  • Prepare and verify VIPRE subchannel analyses, including critical heat flux predictions and margin evaluations.
  • Prepare and verify RELAP system-level analyses for LOCA, non-LOCA transients, and design-basis events.
  • Evaluate system designs and engineered safety features, recommending modifications that preserve safety margins and system performance.
  • Lead cross-functional thermal-hydraulic reviews for reload safety analyses, plant design changes, operational evaluations, and licensing deliverables.
  • Maintain licensed thermal-hydraulic methods, modeling standards, applicability ranges, and implementing analyses.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, prepare engineering and licensing documentation, and support regulator interactions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited four-year institution.
  • At least 8 years of directly relevant full-time engineering experience.
  • Experience with subchannel thermal-hydraulics, transient analysis, and related safety analyses.
  • Eligibility to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance requirements including 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21, and ASME NQA-1.
  • Must live within the contiguous United States and beyond a 30-mile radius of a physical NuScale office for remote work.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience in neutronics or fuel performance.
