Backend Engineer, MTA

Location: Remote in Europe, with work aligned to Americas or European time zones; occasional travel for team off-sites, conferences, and meetups is expected.

Salary: $150,000–$170,000 USD annually, commensurate with experience.

What you will do

• Build and operate email transport infrastructure, including SMTP delivery, MTA systems, routing, retries, and backoff strategies.
• Design domain-level, provider-level, customer-level, and IP-level throttling systems.
• Build shared IP pool, dedicated IP, warmup, and reputation-aware routing infrastructure.
• Improve classification of bounces, deferrals, transient failures, hard failures, and other delivery outcomes.
• Create debugging and observability tools for delivery issues across customers, domains, mailbox providers, routes, IPs, message types, and events.
• Partner with Trust & Safety and Core Sending, participate in incident response, and provide on-call support for critical services.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering experience.
• Experience with email, messaging, notifications, communications, infrastructure, or other high-volume delivery systems.
• Understanding of queues, workers, retries, idempotency, rate limits, backpressure, and distributed systems.
• Experience or strong interest in SMTP, MTAs, DNS, bounces, deferrals, IP pools, and mailbox-provider behavior.
• Focus on reliability, observability, operational excellence, and reducing blast radius.
• Low-ego collaboration, high ownership, and a preference for simple systems.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-workload applications.
• Knowledge of email best practices or willingness to learn the space.
• Experience with TypeScript and Go.
