TL;DR
Electrical / Mechanical Engineer (Power & Cooling): Maintaining electrical power, cooling, and network infrastructure across BT exchange buildings, radio sites, rooftops, and outdoor locations with an accent on high- and low-voltage systems, generators, alarms, and UPS equipment. Focus on performing urgent network repairs, assessing health and safety risks, coordinating field maintenance, and supporting 24/7 service through on-call coverage.

Location: North East England, with frequent travel across Darlington and surrounding areas; work takes place in exchange buildings, radio sites, rooftops, roadside infrastructure, and outdoor environments.

Salary: £44,881 per year plus benefits.

What you will do

  • Maintain electrical power and cooling systems supporting BT’s network operations.
  • Repair and maintain low- and high-voltage systems, generators, emergency lighting, alarms, UPS equipment, and cooling infrastructure.
  • Own designated sites and patches, coordinating prioritised repair, provisioning, and maintenance work.
  • Identify and report health, safety, compliance, design, and operational risks.
  • Carry out risk assessments and support critical and urgent network activity.
  • Share best practices, coach colleagues, and contribute to process improvements.

Requirements

  • Electrical competency equivalent to City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 and 2, NVQ, or an equivalent industry qualification.
  • BTEC Electrical Engineering Level 3, HNC, HND, MOET Level 3, ET Level 3, or equivalent.
  • Full UK manual driving licence required.
  • Ability to travel frequently across the North East and work at physical sites, including towers, rooftops, roadside infrastructure, and outdoor locations.
  • Ability to bend, stretch, kneel, crouch, climb, work at floor and ceiling level, lift heavy drums and cables, and recognise coloured wiring.
  • Participation in a formal out-of-hours on-call framework, commonly with 1-in-4 attendance, is required after training.

Nice to have

  • 18th Edition or current electrical regulations.
  • Inspection, Testing and Verification qualification such as C&G 2392-10.
  • Experience with UPS, DC power systems, HVAC refrigeration, F-GAS Category 1, or air-conditioning split systems.
  • Coaching, mentoring, or supervisory experience.
