Electric Propulsion Engineer (RF gridded ion thrusters): Designing, building, testing, and verifying RF gridded ion thrusters for very-low-Earth-orbit satellites with an accent on plasma generation, ion optics, vacuum systems, and propulsion test campaigns. Focus on turning test results into flight-ready design iterations, operating high-voltage and vacuum hardware, and producing traceable qualification evidence.
Location: Reading, UK; hybrid with one dedicated remote day per week

What you will do
- Own the design and performance calculations of RF gridded ion thrusters from concept through flight configuration.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and control engineers on successive propulsion-system iterations.
- Design and build propulsion test rigs, equipment, and supporting hardware.
- Assemble and operate test hardware, electronics, vacuum facilities, and electric-propulsion systems.
- Plan and run test campaigns, analyse results, and convert findings into design changes and re-tests.
- Document test configurations and results for system verification and qualification.
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of RF gridded ion thrusters, including RF plasma generation, ion optics, and neutralisation.
- Hands-on electric-propulsion testing experience, ideally with RF generators, high-voltage power supplies, and thrust balances.
- Experience with vacuum systems, pumps, gauges, valves, power supplies, fluid-management equipment, and data acquisition.
- Solid grounding in plasma physics, modelling, diagnostics, and ionisation processes.
- Willingness to design, build, and test personal hardware and work extended hours on-site.
Nice to have
- Experience taking a thruster from design through qualification to flight hardware.
- Scripting experience for data analysis and test automation using Python or MATLAB.
- Experience operating thrusters with multiple propellants, such as xenon, krypton, or air.
