R&D Engineer II (Biomedical Devices)

Location: New York, NY, United States; hybrid with onsite work required at least 60% of the working month, approximately 3 days per week.

Salary: $153,000–$191,000 annual base pay, with potential eligibility for a discretionary annual performance bonus.

What you will do

• Design, build, test, and iterate prototypes for point-of-care sample processing and high-throughput single-cell screening.
• Develop mechanisms for controlled timing and sequencing of biochemical processes, including reagent release and passive valving.
• Prepare and handle biological specimens and conduct assay validation experiments covering timing, reagent activity, and sample or cell quality.
• Apply device engineering, cell biology, immunology, and materials science knowledge to hardware design decisions.
• Establish test protocols and acceptance criteria for reproducible performance across prototypes and production lots.
• Document work, report project progress, collaborate with project partners, and contribute to scientific publications and patent applications.

Requirements

• Engineering bachelor's or master's degree, especially in biomedical, chemical, or mechanical engineering, plus 5 or more years of relevant post-graduate hands-on engineering experience; candidates with non-engineering degrees need at least 6 years of hands-on hardware development experience.
• Demonstrated experience developing diagnostic or point-of-care medical devices.
• Experience handling biological samples and independently designing rigorous experiments.
• Proficiency with CAD, 3D printing, and rapid prototyping.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex workflows, drive projects to completion, and maintain strong documentation.
• Collaborative mindset and strong scientific communication skills.

Nice to have

• Wet-lab experience, including cell culture and basic molecular biology.
• Experience with reagent stabilization, lyophilization, or dried-reagent formulation.
• Knowledge of Python, microfluidics, or microfabrication.
