TL;DR
Sr Staff OT Systems/Controls Engineer (OT Systems/Controls): Designing, integrating, and supporting operational technology systems for automated manufacturing across global sites with an accent on PLC-controlled equipment, industrial networks, data platforms, and regulated-system validation. Focus on building scalable OT architectures, integrating SCADA, MES, databases, and enterprise systems, and solving complex issues across controls, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and manufacturing applications.

Location: Onsite in Acton, Massachusetts, United States; approximately 10–20% domestic and international travel is required to support manufacturing sites, suppliers, installations, commissioning, and project activities.

Annual base salary: $122,600–$183,950 for U.S.-based positions, with potential incentive compensation.

What you will do

  • Lead the design, integration, implementation, and lifecycle support of manufacturing OT systems, including HMI, SCADA, industrial networks, servers, databases, and plant or enterprise interfaces.
  • Integrate PLC-controlled manufacturing equipment with historians, MES, databases, industrial data platforms, and other manufacturing applications.
  • Develop OT architectures, network and data-flow diagrams, interface definitions, functional specifications, standards, and engineering documentation.
  • Design and support industrial data integrations using OPC UA, MQTT, SQL databases, APIs, managed file transfer, and historian technologies.
  • Collaborate with IT, Cybersecurity, Controls Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, suppliers, and system integrators to troubleshoot complex OT issues and support commissioning, qualification, startup, and operational turnover.
  • Establish configuration management, backup, disaster recovery, change management, lifecycle, obsolescence, and validation practices for global manufacturing OT systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 10 or more years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, OT systems, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience developing, commissioning, maintaining, or troubleshooting automation and OT systems in manufacturing or industrial environments.
  • Working knowledge of PLC-based equipment controls, HMI, SCADA, industrial communications, industrial Ethernet, managed switches, VLANs, TCP/IP, firewalls, and machine-level data.
  • Experience connecting manufacturing equipment with SCADA, historians, MES, databases, industrial data platforms, or other plant- and enterprise-level systems.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives, document requirements, troubleshoot across controls and infrastructure, and provide technical direction across organizational boundaries.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Rockwell Automation platforms such as Studio 5000, Logix, and FactoryTalk View ME.
  • Experience with communication gateways, edge computing, MQTT infrastructure, or Industrial DataOps platforms such as Litmus, HighByte, or HiveMQ.
  • Knowledge of ISA-95, Unified Namespace architecture, historians, SQL databases, Windows Server, Active Directory, virtualization, certificates, backup systems, and OT DMZ architectures.
  • Scripting or programming experience with Python, PowerShell, SQL, Visual Basic, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or other regulated manufacturing environments, including GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, Computer System Validation, Computer Software Assurance, data integrity, and risk-based change control.
