Principal Industrial Controls Engineer

Location: USA Remote & Travel; up to 60% travel may be required, including travel to client locations and company headquarters.

Base salary: $180,000–$247,500 annually, with benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability, 401(k), and PTO.

What you will do

• Own the architecture, technical strategy, and lifecycle roadmap for industrial controls and simulation platforms.
• Build modular PLC libraries, templates, interfaces, and configuration standards across products and deployments.
• Lead Rockwell Automation PLC, motion control, safety, OT networking, industrial protocol, and HMI/SCADA architecture.
• Define simulation and virtual-commissioning capabilities using digital twins, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, automated regression, and deterministic scenarios.
• Govern platform health through versioning, compatibility, release management, observability, cybersecurity, quality metrics, and technical-debt reduction.
• Lead design reviews, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, technical mentoring, and cross-functional alignment with software, robotics, electrical, systems, deployment, and operations teams.

Requirements

• 12+ years of related experience or equivalent work experience.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical, computer, mechanical, mechatronics, automation engineering, or a related field.
• Expert knowledge of Rockwell Automation PLC platforms, motion control, safety PLC systems, OT networking, and industrial communication protocols.
• Experience defining reusable controls architectures across multiple products, programs, or sites.
• Deep experience with simulation and virtual commissioning, including digital twins, software-in-the-loop or hardware-in-the-loop testing, automated regression, and scenario-based validation.
• Strong HMI/SCADA architecture, PLC software engineering, lifecycle management, communication, mentoring, and stakeholder-management skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with Inductive Automation Ignition.
• Prior direct people-management experience.
