Lead Data Scientist (AI)

Location: Washington, D.C.; hybrid working. Candidates must be based in Washington, D.C. or willing to relocate there and must hold US citizenship. Hybrid employees may work from almost anywhere for up to 90 days per year.

Salary: $144,000–$260,000 estimated base salary annually.

What you will do

• Lead, manage, and grow a data science team while owning objectives, performance, development, and hiring.
• Define and deliver data collections that support compliance models, heuristics, and platform capabilities.
• Own model governance, including inventories, tiering, validation evidence, monitoring, drift detection, and remediation.
• Frame ambiguous research questions, run experiments, and recommend data science priorities to Intelligence leadership, Product, and the Chief Scientist.
• Stay hands-on with coding, method reviews, machine learning, and large behavioural or transactional datasets.
• Set standards for responsible AI use and collaborate with Intelligence, Engineering, Research, Investigations, and Product.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience managing data scientists or machine learning engineers, including performance management and career development.
• Experience hiring technical teams and defining hiring standards.
• Deep, current hands-on data science and machine learning experience with strong Python and SQL skills.
• Experience with a cloud data lake, Spark or Databricks, and AWS.
• AI fluency is essential, including applying AI tools to coding, data exploration, pipelines, models, and automation while critically evaluating outputs.
• US citizenship and presence in Washington, D.C., or willingness to relocate there are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with agentic systems, LLM agents, or autonomous transaction flows.
• Blockchain or on-chain data experience, including clustering, attribution, heuristics, anomaly detection, or mempool analysis.
• Experience in payments, fraud, risk data science, regulated environments, or model risk management.
• Experience building large datasets from scratch, growing a team into a department, or conducting applied research.
