AI Scientist

Location: Based in Milan, Italy; relocation support is available for candidates moving to Italy.

Salary: up to €58,000 per year, depending on seniority.

What you will do

• Develop AI systems using population-scale human genetics and multimodal biomedical data to investigate mechanisms of human disease.
• Build foundation models, multimodal representation learning methods, agentic workflows, and evaluation frameworks.
• Translate research methods into robust, reusable, and benchmarked AI capabilities for multiple projects.
• Develop scalable research software, model-training workflows, and AI systems for large and heterogeneous datasets.
• Design AI systems that connect evidence across biological scales, propose testable hypotheses, and identify informative analyses.
• Lead and contribute to scientific publications, open-source software, collaborations, and reusable research capabilities.

Requirements

• PhD in machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, computational biology, or a related quantitative discipline, or expected completion within six months.
• At least four years of relevant research experience, including doctoral research.
• Strong scientific output in AI, machine learning, computational biology, or biomedicine through publications, open-source software, models, or comparable work.
• Excellent Python programming and software engineering skills, including scalable and maintainable research software and model-training workflows.
• Strong expertise in modern machine learning and AI, with the ability to design and evaluate advanced methods.
• Experience with version control, testing, documentation, reproducibility, and large-scale GPU or HPC environments.

Nice to have

• Experience as an AI/ML architect, research scientist, machine learning scientist, or in a comparable applied R&D role.
• Experience with foundation models, LLM-based agents, agentic workflows, or large-scale scientific AI systems.
• Experience integrating molecular, imaging, clinical, or population-scale biomedical datasets.
• Experience with collaborative software projects, open-source scientific software, workflow management, containerisation, or scalable GPU/HPC computing.
• Experience in human genetics, computational biology, drug discovery, or translational research.
