TL;DR
Silicon Photonics Reliability Engineering Intern (Summer 2027) (Silicon Photonics/Semiconductors): Developing and qualifying reliability tests for CMOS devices and photonic components with an accent on stress testing, failure-mechanism analysis, and lifetime modeling. Focus on analyzing reliability data, investigating waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, and lasers, and supporting technology qualification activities.

Location: Malta, New York, USA; full-time, on-site internship.

Salary: $20.00–$40.00 per hour; final compensation depends on qualifications, experience, and location.

What you will do

  • Design and evaluate reliability test structures for CMOS and silicon photonics devices.
  • Execute reliability stress tests, laboratory measurements, and device characterization activities.
  • Collect, validate, analyze, and communicate reliability data and trends.
  • Support reliability modeling, statistical analysis, lifetime projections, and failure-mechanism investigations.
  • Conduct literature reviews covering silicon photonics reliability, degradation mechanisms, failure modes, and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with technology development, manufacturing, process integration, design, test, and reliability teams on qualification projects.

Requirements

  • Must be at least a sophomore and enrolled during the internship in an accredited bachelor's, master's, or PhD program in photonics engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, physics, applied physics, semiconductor engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and good academic standing.
  • English fluency required for written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship.
  • Basic understanding of semiconductor device physics and interest in semiconductor devices and photonics.
  • Ability to analyze technical data, solve engineering problems, and collaborate effectively.

Nice to have

  • Prior internship or co-op, leadership, project management, or research experience.
  • Coursework or research in silicon photonics, optoelectronics, semiconductor devices, materials science, or reliability engineering.
  • Familiarity with waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, lasers, or optical communication systems.
  • Experience with laboratory measurements, experimental research, or data analysis using Python, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, Excel, or similar tools.
  • Understanding of basic statistics and reliability concepts, plus interest in AI tools and emerging technologies.
