TL;DR
Technical Editor (Transportation): Editing and refining technical brochures, operating procedures, research reports, summaries, and guidance documents for a transportation-focused client with an accent on accuracy, readability, plain language, and government editorial standards. Focus on fact-checking complex technical content, applying GPO and TFHRC guidelines, supporting Section 508 accessibility, and managing publication-quality reviews.

Location: Hybrid, with at least two days per week onsite in McLean, Virginia, generally Monday through Thursday; occasional travel to other local facilities may be required. The position is associated with Reston, Virginia.

Salary: $67,063–$114,008 per year based on full-time employment.

What you will do

  • Edit technical brochures, standard operating procedures, research reports, technical summaries, and guidance documents.
  • Apply TFHRC, U.S. Government Publishing Office, and Chicago style standards.
  • Improve structure, grammar, accuracy, readability, consistency, and plain-language communication.
  • Distill complex data into clear narrative and graphic content for technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Fact-check references and ensure copyright, licensing, attribution, and publication-quality compliance.
  • Collaborate with clients, subject matter experts, authors, engineers, and project staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, or a related scientific or technical field.
  • 3–10 years of experience in technical writing, documentation, editing, proofreading, copy editing, or substantive editing.
  • At least 1 year of experience applying the TFHRC Research, Development, and Technology Communication Reference Guide and the U.S. Government Publishing Office Style Manual.
  • Experience reviewing complex technical materials for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and completeness.
  • Ability to support Section 508 accessibility and copyright, licensing, attribution, and reference requirements.
  • Ability to obtain a government security clearance if required by the contract; testing is part of the interview process.

Nice to have

  • Experience with transportation, highway, or surface transportation materials.
  • Experience editing engineering, scientific, research, government, or agency publications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, PDF and document-production tools, accessibility workflows, and online publishing.
  • Experience managing publications from outline and drafts through reviews, revisions, production, and release.
