TL;DR
Tech & Language Specialist (Subtitling) (subtitling/localisation): Performing technical and linguistic quality control for subtitles, closed captions, forced narratives, recuts and localisation deliverables with an accent on timing, positioning, proofreading and workflow accuracy. Focus on testing ASR, STT and MT technologies, developing subtitling guidelines, evaluating suppliers, and training colleagues and freelance partners.

Location: Malaysia (Remote); working hours are 9:30am to 6:00pm UK time (GMT/BST), with flexibility required during peak periods or to meet business needs.

What you will do

  • Perform full and spot technical quality control on subtitles, closed captions and forced narrative files across multiple languages.
  • Identify, correct and report timing, positioning and other technical subtitle issues.
  • Prepare, export and quality-check subtitle and localisation deliverables, including forced narrative, partial subtitle and recut files.
  • Review rejection reports, investigate issues and provide corrections or feedback.
  • Evaluate subtitling, translation and localisation tests for freelance suppliers and assess new workflow tools.
  • Create and maintain guidelines, train employees and freelance partners, and provide linguistic and technical support.

Requirements

  • Degree in Audiovisual Translation or a related subject.
  • Native-standard English skills at CEFR C2 level or equivalent proficiency, including excellent grammar, idiom and cultural awareness.
  • Experience in subtitling, translation, localisation or media localisation, including technical quality control and recut work.
  • Experience with subtitling specifications, software and professional proofreading.
  • Strong technical aptitude, accuracy, organisation and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

  • Experience with machine translation, automatic speech recognition and speech-to-text post-editing.
  • Experience testing MT, ASR and STT engines.
