TL;DR
Senior Specialist, Mechanical Engineer (Defense Tech): Designing and qualifying precision mechanisms and electromechanical hardware for mission systems in high-consequence defense environments with an accent on mechanical design, prototype integration, and qualification testing. Location: On-site in Sterling, Virginia, United States; work includes direct laboratory, prototype, integration, and hardware-test activities.

Salary: $102,000–$189,000 per year in Virginia.

What you will do

  • Lead mechanical design, analysis, prototype integration, and qualification testing for precision mechanisms and electromechanical hardware.
  • Develop 3D models, engineering drawings, technical data packages, and assembly documentation.
  • Evaluate materials and design trade-offs involving performance, size, weight, power, manufacturability, and reliability.
  • Plan and execute component- and system-level tests, analyze results, and implement design improvements.
  • Present designs and test results in peer reviews, PDRs, CDRs, and customer reviews.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, quality, configuration management, suppliers, technicians, and test teams to transition designs into production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience, graduate degree with at least 4 years of related experience, or 10 years of related experience without a degree.
  • Active Top Secret/SCI clearance and a current favorable polygraph are required before starting; clearance active within the last two years may be considered.
  • Must be able to work on-site in a combination of office and laboratory environments.
  • Experience with mechanical design, engineering drawings, tolerance analysis, and GD&T.
  • Experience designing, integrating, and testing complex mechanical hardware and precision mechanisms.
  • Security clearances may only be granted to U.S. citizens.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as Creo and knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
  • Experience with mechatronic systems, module and electronics packaging, thermal and structural loading, and size, weight, and power optimization.
  • Experience with additive manufacturing, design for manufacture and assembly, actuators, custom gear trains, electro-optical systems, materials testing, or manufacturing processes.
  • Experience supporting field tests or demonstrations.
